International Research Experience

CO-WY AMP International Research Experience (IRE)

The Colorado-Wyoming Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-WY AMP) has developed the International Research Experience (IRE) for students at both 2-year and 4-year institutions to provide laboratory research or field experiences at international locations. As part of the IRE program, students are provided transportation and additional funds (up to $1500) to cover housing or incidental costs, as needed.

All students involved in CO-WY AMP’s IRE agree to participate in follow-up surveys in order to establish the effectiveness of programming.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must meet CO-WY AMP participant eligibility requirements:
    • Be enrolled at a CO-WY AMP campus, in an NSF approved STEM undergraduate degree program.
    • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder)
    • Self-identify as a historically underrepresented minority (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander and Alaskan Native)
  • The international program must have a clear scope of STEM research or field experience that involves a faculty mentor with on-site supervision for the duration of the project.
  • Duration of the project/research is subject to approval, but a two-week (or longer) period is suggested, as anything shorter will need additional justification.
  • There is no minimum GPA requirement to apply for the IRE, but applicants must be in good academic standing.
  • Following the research experience, award recipients will be required to complete the following requirements:
    • Complete a post-trip questionnaire
    • Submit photos (minimum 2) showing student participating in research environment
    • Submit a 1-2 page post-experience essay on 1) what they gained from the experience and 2) how the experience met (or didn’t meet) their expectations.

Note: Applications are currently closed for 2022, and may reopen at a later date, pending available funding.
